Frequently Asked Questions

1. How safe are school buses compared to other forms of transportation?

School buses are one of the safest ways for children to travel. They are designed with reinforced structures, high seat backs, bright visibility, and trained professional drivers. Statistically, students are far safer riding a school bus than being driven to school in a family vehicle.

2. What training do Lezette Express drivers receive?

Our drivers undergo extensive background checks, drug and alcohol testing, behind-the-wheel training, annual evaluations, and ongoing safety workshops. Every driver must meet or exceed New York State DOT and DMV certification standards.

3. What should students do while waiting for the bus?

Students should arrive 5 minutes early, wait at least 10 feet away from the roadway, avoid running or playing near traffic, and never approach the bus until it has fully stopped and the driver signals it’s safe to board.

4. How should my child safely board and exit the bus?

Students should use the handrail, avoid pushing, and step on and off one at a time. After exiting, they should walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus—never behind it—and make eye contact with the driver before crossing.

5. What is the “danger zone” around a school bus?

The danger zone is the 10-foot perimeter all around a bus where visibility is limited for the driver. Students should keep a safe distance and never attempt to retrieve dropped items without telling the driver first.

6. What safety rules should children follow while on the bus?

Students should stay seated, face forward, keep aisles clear, speak quietly, and follow the driver’s instructions at all times. Safe behavior helps the driver stay focused on the road.

7. What should drivers on the road do when a school bus stops?

In New York State, all vehicles must stop—from both directions—when a school bus displays red flashing lights. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and extremely dangerous.

8. How does Lezette Express maintain its buses?

Each bus receives regular scheduled maintenance, rigorous safety inspections, and daily pre-trip and post-trip checks. Our fleet meets or exceeds all NYSDOT safety requirements.

9. What should I do if I have a safety concern?

You can contact Lezette Express immediately through our safety hotline at (845) 246-5878 or online contact form. We take all concerns seriously and respond promptly to ensure student safety.
